TAVISTOCK as it was almost 100 years ago can be revisited in astonishing detail, thanks to the publication of an old Ordnance Survey map of the town.

Tavistock 1905, by Alan Godfrey Maps, reproduces the plan, photographically reduced to approximately 14 inches to one mile, for the town, extending eastwards to Kelly College and Mount Tavy.

It shows buildings such as the workhouse, the two railway stations and the market hall as well as the disused Tavistock Canal, the cattle market and housing of all kinds from narrow medieval streets to spacious Victorian villas.

The scale of the map allows great detail to be shown and includes railway signposts, milestones, letter boxes, even stalls at the cattle market! The map also includes extracts from a contemporary trade directory and an introduction by Dr Tom Greeves.

Tavistock 1905 is available from booksellers or direct from the publishers who are based in County Durham.
