Devon & Exeter Premier
Pinhoe 1
Okehampton Argyle 2
A GOAL from Danny Maddax five minutes from time gave Okehampton a well deserved victory.
They started the brighter of the two teams and playing against the wind had far more possession, carving out some good chances. But failure to make the most of them has dogged the team all season and this first half was no different.
The side were grateful to Richard Bailey who made an excellent save to keep the scores level when Pinhoe broke through en masse.
Pinhoe in the first half created two chances, the first blocked by Kevin Gill and the second stopped by a Bailey save.
The story was much the same in the second half with Okehampton playing well, creating good chances.
In the 56th minute Okehampton made the breakthrough: Paul Yip picked the ball up just inside their half and ran at the Pinhoe defence. They never made a tackle, expecting him to pass to Adam Mortimer. He was in an offside position, so they stood still and Yip went through on his own and beat the keeper with a chipped shot.
Okehampton held this lead until the 75th minute when Pinhoe scored from close range following a free kick on the touchline.
Okehampton kept trying to get the winner, and it came in an unlikely way. Five minutes from time they were awarded a corner, Maddax swung the ball in under the crossbar inviting a challenge. The keeper missed it under pressure from Adam Mortimer and Pinhoe thought they had cleared the ball off the line only to hear the referee's whistle for a goal.
A yellow card was shown to a Pinhoe player for protesting.
Argyle deserved this win having had at least 75 per cent of the game.
The back three of Vernon, Gill and Agnew gave little away, the midfield quintet of Yip, Johnson, Bourne, King and Gibbs were industrious and the front two of Maddax and Mortimer never stopped running.
No game this week, but Argyle are at home to Witheridge on March 23, in the league. Kick-off 3pm. players to be at the clubhouse at 2pm.
