AN Okehampton vet has issued a warning to West Devon residents, after a labrador was accidentally poisoned. Roger Cunningham of North Park Vet Group, was called out to a local farm on a recent Saturday afternoon, after labrador Lizzie was taken ill. Mr Cunningham said: ?Lizzie helped herself to some food provided to a horse, which had some wormer containing an avermectin product mixed into it. ?No-one knows whether she tucked into the bucket itself, or simply picked up the bits falling out of the horse?s mouth. About four hours later she started to have fits and became unable to walk.? Lizzie was transferred to the surgery, where Mr Cunningham put an intravenous drip-line in, heavily sedated her, and checked on her over the weekend as she rested and convalesced. By Monday morning, her tail worked, she could stand up and just about walk, and was hungry again. Mr Cunningham said her sight and co-ordination returned over the next 10-14 days, and she is now back to her old self. Her added: ?This is an interesting case, as labradors, horses and wormers are frequently all present in the same place at the same time, therefore it should serve as a warning to all horse and dog owners.? He said incidents where dogs had swallowed wormer were difficult to treat, because often the amount eaten is unknown, and the effects on each dog may be different. ?The dose in a horse wormer syringe is sufficient for a 500kg horse, the average Lab weighs in at 25-30kg, so 20 times the body weight dose if they eat the lot!? Roger said. North Park Vet Group will next month open up a new branch surgery on the corner of Cranmere Road on Exeter Road Industrial Estate. This unit is being converted into a small animal branch and will have regular consulting times during the week and Saturday morning. Facilities for routine operations will be added within a few months of the opening, due to take place on July 4. Roger said: ?We are obviously extremely pleased to now be able to offer this facility to all our clients, old and new, and look forward to seeing them there.?
