TAVISTOCK Ladies' Hockey Club hosted the Kelly Shield Tournament at Kelly College on Saturday.

The 'round robin' tournament saw all teams playing each other. They were: Tavistock Ladies, Mannamead 1st XI, Plym Valley and Bude 2nd XI. All the matches were of a good standard with numerous goals being scored.

The last match was between Tavistock and Mannamead who were both competing for first position. After a tough game Mannamead just won 1-0. The trophy was presented to Mannamead by Kelly College headmaster Mark Steed.

Tavistock played well throughout the tournament with some good passing play. The first match against Bude 2nd XI was a good building block for Tavistock to slot many goals.

Jo Gaspar and Emma White worked well together and were able to hit some strong balls into the D. New player to the squad Laura Stapleton put the first goal past the opposition through excellent dribbling skills. The second came from Gaspar who was fed the ball by Susannah Boulle.

Laura Armstrong and Lisa Butler passed between each other, resulting in Butler scoring the third goal. The defence of Babs Horton and Fiona Dunn cleared any ball which may have posed a threat.

Sue Murrin scored the fourth goal from a good ball in by Claire Jackson and Armstrong finished the game with the fifth goal.

The second match against Plym Valley made Tavistock have to work harder for victory. Sally Kilpatrick ran effortlessly on the wing and fed good balls into the D. The opposition's defence was strong but despite this Tavistock had numerous chances on which they did not capitalise. Boulle and Stapleton picked up 'floating' players and Sandra Collar blocked out some early balls down the left hand side.

The midfield play of White, Boulle and Butler allowed Stapleton to score the only goal of the match. The final score was 1-0 to Tavistock.

The last game against Mannamead was an enjoyable one to watch and play. Dunn and Horton had a superb game and Dunn had runs up the pitch in order to put more pressure on the opposition.

Mannamead had a lucky break and scored an easy goal. Tavistock picked up their game and passed the ball to each other. Gaspar and White were hungry for goals but the final whistle went leaving the score at 1-0 to Mannamead.

The final positions of the tournament were: 1, Mannamead; 2, Tavistock; 3, Bude; 4, Plym Valley.

This week Tavistock are at home at 12.30pm at Bickleigh Barracks against Exeter 3rd XI.
