LOVE really was wonderful the second time around for a couple who married at Horrabridge on Saturday . . .
Peggy and Barry Bryant tied the knot at the parish church ? 20 years to the day after they were first married to each other.
The couple?s first marriage ended in divorce many years ago, but when they met by chance in a Tavistock supermarket their love was rekindled.
The pair lost touch when Barry moved away to continue his career in the RAF, but after 27 years? service he retired to the area and met Peggy again.
Peggy said: ?We got together, went on a few outings and went from there.?
After last Christmas the couple decided it was ?time to put the record straight? by retying the knot. They chose last Saturday as it was the anniversary of their original wedding day.
Horrabridge Parish Church, for the first time in its history, allowed a divorced person to be married within its doors. A recent change of rules meant the divorced couple could be married there provided the parochial church council agreed. ?They decided they would love to marry us in church,? Barry said.
Peggy and Barry?s first marriage was a register office wedding with only three guests ? this time round barmaid Peggy was determined they should have everything they had missed on that occasion.
There was a full church service with special flowers, an official photographer, wedding cars, more than 100 guests and a reception at the London Inn where Peggy works.
?It was a fantastic day, really beautiful,? said Peggy.
Barry added: ?We?re feeling on top of the world ? we haven?t landed yet. It brought tears to our eyes.?
The happy couple thanked everyone ? particularly the staff at the London Inn ? for the work they had done, unknown to them, to make the day a success. Ten of Peggy?s customers from 20 years ago provided a guard of honour. ?We cannot thank them enough,? Barry said.
?We said no presents but we were presented with a cheque for £500 from ?Friends of London Inn? and a bottle of champagne ? we just could?t have asked for a more memorable occasion ? it?s been a phenomenal day.?
Barry said he was now back living in the house with wallpaper he had put up 20 years ago ? and underneath it were messages they had written to each other all those years ago: ?I love you?.
