OKEHAMPTON Golf Club's first veterans' open of the new season produced a large field and the weather was fine for all 180 competitors.
The vice-captain of the veterans, Den Adams, took charge for the day because this year's veterans' captain, Jim Higdon, was on holiday. Everyone enjoyed the day and the results were: 1, Dave Brown, Dave Parsons and Danny James, 84 points; 2, David File, Andrew Smallridge and Ray Piper, 82; 3, the club captain John Spry, Den Adams and Dan Potter 79.
The veterans of Okehampton also had a fine win in the first round of the county Emmerton Court Trophy.
They played Teign Valley Golf Club on a home and away basis and won 9 matches to 1.
The three-man junior side of Steven Hill, Michael White and James Hall travelled to Truro Golf Club for the regional qualifying event of the British Heart Foundation Junior Championship.
The boys produced three great scores of 43, 36 and 35 stableford points to win the event.
The next round is at Taunton Vale Golf Club when the top three teams will qualify to go to the Belfry later in the year.
The club held a three ball aggregate event for the John Norman Trophy. The field of 123 players again produced some fine golf in blustery conditions with Nick Phear scoring 43 points off a handicap of 8 in the winning three.
1, Nick Phear, Barry Coaker and Rob Curtis 109 points; 2, Nick Atkinson, Alan Jones and Richard Johnson, 101; 3, Kevin Cornwall, Colin Cornwall and John Tolley, 97.
To finish a busy week, the club held its first mixed open of the year. Again the weather was kind and the scoring was very good.
The format for the day was a greensomes stableford and was won by a home pairing of David Hill and Lorna Rolfe with a score of 44 points.
Best visitors in second place were Mr and Mrs J Gawman from Tavistock with 40 points.
