NORTH Tawton Parish Council has asked West Devon Borough Council to explain its decision to close the town?s public toilets from April.

Following last week?s town council meeting, a statement was issued which said the authority was dismayed by the closure as many people visiting the town use the facilities. They included shoppers, Tarka Trail walkers and local people including mothers with children and the elderly. Additionally, the town council said there were 100 new dwellings under construction or nearing completion.

?The council are angry after a recent report from West Devon Borough Council listed considerable defects to the building due to lack of maintenance by the council.? It would mean considerable expense to North Tawton Town Council if it took on the running of the public conveniences, the statement added.

The town council says that in March 2001, at the request of the borough, it reported many defects, some outstanding from 1996, none of which have been tackled.

Council members proposed to ask the chief executive of West Devon Council to attend the next council meeting in February to explain the reasons behind the closure due to take effect on April 1.
