CALLING all former Kings and Queens ? Hatherleigh Carnival committee seeks your regal presence to help celebrate the event?s centenary year.

With the first formal record of the event traced back to 1903, this year the organisers are determined to celebrate in style.

?We would like the names of people who were Kings and Queens down the years so that they can have an official invitation to the Past Carnival Queens? and Kings? evening which will be a special event in the town hall on June 7,? said spokesperson Louise Bater.

If you have worn the crown contact carnival secretary Mandy Wonnacott on (01837) 810678 before the end of April.

To give as big a picture of previous carnivals as possible the committee is also keen to know if people still have their carnival dresses or photos of themselves in costume.

The history of this annual extravaganza will be on view in a weekend-long exhibition of carnival memorabilia on May 17 to 19.

This is being mounted by Hatherleigh History Society and if anyone has items they would like to loan to the exhibition please hand them in to Louise at 34 Bridge Street, Hatherleigh or Debbie at Hatherleigh Newsagents.

This year the committee is seeking a Centenary Queen and the closing date for entries is April 30.

The first fundraising event is an Easter Bingo evening on April 12 at Highampton Village Hall to raise money for the tar barrels. Doors open 7.15pm, eyes down at 8pm.
