A MAMMOTH charity bike ride passed through Bridestowe on Friday July 22, with riders stopping in the White Hart Inn on their way through.

A team of 12 cyclists, collectively known as the Stockton Wheelers, rode the 951 miles from John O'Groats to Land's End, endeavouring to raise a combined total of £15,000.

The riders split into two fundraising teams, each supporting a different charity — the first was collecting for the Myriad Centre in Worcester, a charitable day care centre for young adults with severe disabilities. The objective was to raise £7,500 to equip the centre with a new kitchen.

The second group was raising funds for Cyclists Fighting Cancer, a charitable organisation dedicated to providing specialist bikes, trikers and tandems for children whose lives are affected by cancer. They also aimed to raise £7,500 for their charity.

Their journey began on July 15, with the team ending up at Land's End on Saturday July 23. The group made their penultimate pit stop at the White Hart for refreshments before completing their day's cycling to Wadebridge.

One of the riders Oliver Turner said: 'We averaged 105 miles per day, and despite some awful weather in Scotland and the North at the start of the challenge ended our ride in perfect sunshine at Land's End.'

The riders were supported by Otter Brewery, for whom Oliver is the national accounts manager. They supplied the team with specially customised t-shirts and much welcomed beer along the way. They also donated £150 to the cause.
