PEOPLE across West Devon can now log on to the worldwide web for free in schools, community halls and even a local shop thanks to an initiative to provide internet access for most residents within three miles of their home. The network of community-based computers can be found at Bere Alston Primary School, Clearbrook Village Hall, Hatherleigh Area Project Office, Lewdown Victory Hall, Lifton Primary School, Lydford Primary School, Milton Abbot Village Hall, North Tawton Town Council Office and The Store at South Zeal. Devon County Council is promoting use of the internet to encourage more people to access the on-line services provided by local authorities and national organisations ? known as e-Government. As a reward for achieving its target of providing community-based computers for 95% of Devon?s population the county council is to receive a £250,000 bonus from the government. County leader Cllr Christine Channon said: ?I am delighted at the response and the many offers of assistance. By having on-line access to local and national government, people can receive services and information more efficiently at the touch of a button.?
