I SEE Cllr Dick Eberlie and Geoffrey Cox (Letters, October 30) are up to the Tories' old trick. Bereft of anything positive to say about themselves they resort to scaremongering about others.
The Conservative Cllr and prospective parliamentary candidate attack the Lib Dems' Local Income Tax policy by implying it will mean higher bills for us all. He obviously missed my letter two weeks ago, where I stated the Lib Dems' very clear position on this very welcome policy.
A Local Income Tax would only see bills rise for those people earning over £45,000 a year. That means a small minority in West Devon would see their tax bills rise, everyone else would see theirs falling (or standing still) including the vast majority of the pensioners he mentions.
This would seem an appropriate moment to repeat a well known saying, 'lies, lies and damned statistics'. And as for suggesting parallels with his own party's Poll Tax, well I for one am laughing out loud! Does he really think anyone is going to fall for that?
Shame on Cllr Eberlie and Mr Cox for trying to prey on the fears of the most vulnerable in our community. I thought the Tories had repositioned themselves as the champions of the people? Have we perhaps reached the point where we really can't trust a thing a Tory politician says anymore?
