WEST Devon residents who have been hit by flooding and those concerned about the issue can get advice on how to protect their homes and businesses this winter at a special event this month.
The West Devon Flooding and Emergency Planning Forum will bring together organisations, experts and flood protection suppliers who are able to give advice and talk about some of the products available to help householders to help themselves against flooding.
The event has been organised by West Devon Borough Council and takes place on Monday, September 16 between 4pm and 8pm at Kilworthy Park in Tavistock.
Everyone is welcome.
Borough council leader, Cllr Philip Sanders, said: 'Over the past year, homes and businesses have been affected by flooding in a number of West Devon communities.
'Responsible agencies have held evidence gathering sessions since then and a number of schemes have been or are being put in place to try to prevent future problems.
'However, this forum is all about how homes and businesses can be better protected against flooding in the future using simple self help measures. We hope that those who have been affected by flooding in the past, or those who are concerned for the future, will attend this worthwhile forum.'
Fourteen flood product suppliers will be on hand to showcase a variety of innovations including flood barriers, flood proof door guards, airbrick covers and alternatives to sandbags.
The Met Office will be giving a presentation about forecasting and weather warnings with the Environment Agency doing a talk about flood warnings and Floodline.
Devon County Council will have information about maintaining watercourses and riparian ownership.
Officers from West Devon Borough Council will be giving practical tips on how to use sandbags correctly as well as details of how to prepare an emergency plan.
