A FORMER Kelly College employee is heading out to the Himalayas to raise money for ActionAid in November.
Liz Rowley, from Weir Quay, will be taking to the hills and trekking 100km in the Himalayan mountains, camping at night in altitudes up to 3,000 metres.
Liz hopes to raise £3,000 for ActionAid, whose life changing work helps some of the poorest people in the world and gives people hope and skills to improve their lives and those of their children.
'I am really looking forward to this amazing trek and am working hard to fund raise and get thoroughly fit,' said the 60 year old enthusiast.
The group of volunteers will spend a day in an ActionAid project in Deli and then head up to Dharamsala, where they hope to meet the Dalai Lama, and then on to Bir, where the trekking really begins.
It is an opportunity of a lifetime for Liz, who has wanted to visit India for many years.
Her parents met there and she is fascinated by its culture and religious diversity. Liz considers Tavistock to be an ideal place when preparing for her adventure, with Dartmoor on the doorstep.
Helen Walker, ActionAid's fundraising spokesperson said: 'Charity adventures are a challenge, both mentally and physically, testing people's endurance to the limit.
'At the same time, they take people to some of the most culturally rich places in the world, and they leave with a sense of achievement you don't often get from a two week package holiday.'
