A BEAUTIFUL living sculpture is now growing at Roadford Lake near Broadwoodwidger, thanks to the hard work of children and youth workers.

The children?s Root Group, which consists of members of the Cornish Fox Club and Devon Wildlife Trust, approached South West Lakes Trust recently for permission and help with constructing a willow sculpture by the lake.

A construction day was held, split into a morning and afternoon session.

During the morning, Lakes Trust rangers and Wildlife Watch leaders were taught by Lynne Edwards and Jennifer Jones of the Yarner Trust how to prepare the ground for the willow sculpture.

The Root Group then spent the afternoon helping to construct the sculpture and making small woven willow items like bird feeders.

Liz Eagle, information officer for South West Lakes Trust, said: ?The day was remarkable, from the first stage of construction you could see a wonderful shape forming.

?Group leaders and rangers were able to learn this ancient skill and then teach the Root Group members and their parents.?

Liz said she hoped the willow sculpture would become a play attraction for Roadford?s youngest visitors.

A second sculpture is also planned along the off-road cycle track at the lake.
