MORETONHAMPSTEAD-based author Ian Mortimer will be signing copies of his latest book in Chagford next week.

The Greatest Traitor is a history of the life of Sir Roger Mortimer (no relation), the 1st Earl of March and ruler of England from 1327 to 1330.

The captive rebel baron escaped from the Tower of London in 1323 to become the lover of Isabella, the Queen of England, in France. A year later, they returned to England with an invading army and swept to power ? the King of England, Edward II, allegedly being murdered at Berkley Castle with a red-hot poker.

Ian Mortimer, who was interviewed on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme recently, is an archivist and lecturer in British History at the University of Exeter, from where he graduated with a history degree in 1989. He has also worked at the Devon Public Records Offices and Reading University.

He will be signing copies of his book at The Bookshop, Chagford on Friday April 11 at 11am.
