YEAR 13 pupil Liam Franz from Callington Community College recently won the opportunity to control a probe orbiting Saturn, via a live video conference link with a Californian laboratory. To win the competition, Liam had to submit an essay justifying on scientific grounds which one of four images he would have the space probe take.  Liam's entry won the 16-18 year old category with his choice of image of the moon Prometheus appearing from around the corner of Saturn. Saturn is famous for its magnificent rings and lies 950 million miles away from the earth. It can be seen as a small yellow star-like object in the early morning. The Cassini Probe orbiting Saturn was controlled via a live video conference link with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.  The competition is usually open only to American students, however, the Callington Space Centre with its work with Queen Mary University London secured an opportunity for Callington students to be involved.  Liam will be presented with a unique copy of his image as taken by the space probe soon.
