TAVISTOCK and District 20/20 Premiership Trophy Competition started in bright and warm sunshine on Sunday, with a shock result in the first game as an enthusiastic Yelverton side beat the home team of Tavistock by nine runs. Bridestowe took the next match against Lydford, while Yelverton continued winning ways by beating Whitchurch in a high scoring game. In a decisive match for the second group, Lewdown beat Bridestowe, reaching the final against Yelverton in good style. A big crowd of onlookers was treated to an exciting final as Lewdown racked up a formidable total of 102 in their ten overs. Yelverton were unable to match this despite some sterling efforts, and in the end could only reach 73 in reply. Toby Street, of Lewdown, was awarded man of the match for his all round performance. Trophies and medals were presented by Tony Kaminski of Kaminski Property Rentals, sponsors of the event. Once again, a large crowd enjoyed a great afternoon's entertainment with the winners, representing the West Devon region, going on to play in the county finals at Torquay on Sunday August 17. Club chairman Andy Jarman said: 'We are delighted that this event is attracting such excellent support from both local clubs and members of the public. 'The event is going from strength to strength but is only made possible by the efforts of tea ladies who produce anything up to a hundred lunches and teas, a dedicated and hard working team of bar staff and many others who give up the whole day and more besides to stage this event.'
