AFTER a poor display against Chelston where they were bowled out for 123, Lewdown?s 1st XI were looking for a vast improvement against Chagford on Saturday. Their poor run has been due not to lack of want, but simply an inability to score runs. Versus Chelston the toss was lost and Lewdown were put in to bat. After losing Ball early, Skuse and Cathcart were called on to steady the innings. With boundaries hard to come by they pushed the ball round the park for ones and twos, but were not able to put the bad ball away. Losing Cathcart to a run out, the wickets started to tumble at steady intervals and they were soon in trouble. A final fling from Edmonds and Hughes took the total past 100, but 123 was going to be a hard total to defend. The bowling display was disciplined but an aggressive batting attack from the start from Chelston?s openers saw them reach 50 without loss, and the game was all but over. Eventually, losing six wickets, Chelston reached the total and won the game. Against Chagford, Lewdown?s spirits were high, improved by winning the toss and electing to bowl. Two of the new additions for this year are Yeo and Street, the latter picking up an injury to his knee, looked good and bowled quickly, as did Edmonds and Ball. Hughes was his typical accurate self and some good fielding and exceptional catching, particularly by Squire, off the back of his first ton scored in competitive cricket for Lewdown for the seconds the week previously, meant the score was certainly achievable, 214 from 46 overs. The batting display, however would beg to differ. After losing Squire to the first ball of the innings, a steady partnership between Ball and Skuse was beginning to build. However, an unfortunate lbw, began the collapse, and at 84 for 5 Lewdown were left 85 all out, the loss of the last five wickets for one run. Lewdown hope to change their fortunes away against Bridestowe, this weekend. l Lewdown Second XI gave a much improved bowling display against Calstock on Saturday, after scoring 257 the week before only to lose to Cornwood (Squire 127 no). Lewdown batted first and totalled 198, with Clements top scoring with 57. It was again Clements who did the damage with the ball, taking the last four wickets, with additions from Gibbs, Squire and Vernon to finish the game with Calstock scoring 149. This weekend the Tamar side will face Buckland at home.
