DAVE Goodwin's letter (October 3) agreeing with my concerns about the government's betrayal of rural post offices, which is hitting our post offices in West Devon very hard, is most welcome, coming from a confirmed Liberal Democrat.
But, I am sure he'd agree with a lot more I am saying if only he took off his blinkers and removed his earplugs. Here's another one for you, Dave . . .
Let's stop the government constantly trying to control our police, schools and health service from the top down with bullying targets, initiatives and directives, and funding with complex strings attached, and return the discretion to police, teachers, doctors and nurses, accountable to local people.
Let's restore the link now between the state pension and average earnings to provide a decent non-means tested income for pensioners. Oh, and while we are at it, let's abolish tuition fees for every student and fight to preserve the traditional English right of jury trial. Surely, we can agree on these things, can't we Dave?
True, I don't agree with the Lib Dem 'solutions' . . . higher taxes, more bureaucracy, regional governments setting another so-called 'local' income tax and a European Constitution and currency. No thanks, Dave . . .
But I'll have that promised fiver!
