MY wife and I both signed the 'Save Meadowlands' petition as we are regular users of the swimming pool. We were clear that its main thrust was to save the facility within its present location that includes a swimming pool, toddler/learners pool and the 'wet and wild' leisure element. We were very concerned at the front page of last week's paper where the reporter seemed to concentrate on continuing some of the facilities at another location and not echoing the petition's original call to keep it in Meadowlands. It appears as though the elected members of the council have already moved in this direction with their letter to Kelly College asking for more details of the proposed Olympic pool, that could well lead to this being a joint initiative with that organisation and therefore the demise of Meadowlands. As Cllr Sanders at the meeting voiced some uncertainty past 2015 with allusions to the spectre of a new unitary authority being set up, one imagines that refers to South Hams and West Devon being assimilated into a new authority; it seems a little presumptive to enter into any negotiations with Kelly College on a project that could take many months or years to reach fruition. Personally I would rather see public money being continued to support a successful local council-owned leisure facility run on a day-to-day basis in partnership with a scrutinised management company than divert scarce resources into the pockets of what at the end of the day could be described as a private company. We have a well-run and brilliant resource at Meadowlands — let's not lose it. Iain Andrews Inswell Court Tavistock
