CHILDREN at Okehampton Primary School children enjoyed a visit from a diminutive character last Tuesday as part of a year-long project.
Pupils and staff at the school were enchanted by the visit of Dora the three-legged dormouse, brought in by registered handler Paula Wolton from Hatherleigh.
Dora is part of the dormouse captive breeding programme at Paignton Zoo, but is unsuitable for breeding. She is now looked after by Paula in a large aviary which replicates her natural habitat.
Fran Rickwood, eco school co-ordinator, said: 'Everyone at the school fell in love with Dora. For children to actually see a dormouse curled up at close quarters was a privilege and prompted many excited comments from children and adults alike.'
Paula was able to hold Dora, lethargic before her imminent hibernation, and show her to each class without disturbing her or putting her in any discomfort.
The visit was part of a project incorporating the whole school about the ecology of the hazel dormouse. The project will run throughout the school year and has so far included a visit from storyteller Clive Pig, with the storytelling portion of the project hopefully leading to the publication of a story book.
