THE switching on of the Trees of Light in Bedford Square took place last Friday, marking the start of Tavistock?s festive season. The three giant Christmas trees situated on the front of Tavistock Town Hall were lit up, along with the Christmas lights around the town. President of the Tavistock Lions Club, Jeff Lea, turned on the lights and thanked everyone for turning up to the event on such a wet evening. Each bulb on the three trees has been sponsored by an individual or family in memory of a loved one or a good cause, with all proceeds going to charity. So far, more than £5,000 has been raised this year, which will be shared between Children?s Hospice South West and the Tavistock Community Specialist Palliative Care Team. Mr Lea also expressed thanks to Morris Bros in Tavistock for covering all the administration costs, Tavistock Woodlands for supplying the main tree, the Times for publishing the sponsorship form and the works staff of Tavistock Town Council for erecting the trees. When the lights were switched on a short prayer service of remembrance followed, led by the Rev Jeff Moles with the Rev Paula Rennie and Father Denis O?Gorman.
