PUPILS from South Tawton Primary school had the joy of having their normal school timetable put to one side last week, as they enjoyed a multi-faith day. On the last day of half term children moved their way around different religious bases within the school. Some went to the local church where Rev Thayer welcomed them and talked to them about Christianity. Some attended a Muslim wedding, learnt how Muslims prepare for prayer and they even joined in a prayer session by learning all about the significance of washing rituals, facing East and correct body postures. Others learnt about Sikhism through the use of information technology while some crafted Jewish artefacts and learnt about Jewish food. Children were then entertained by a Hindu visitor who crafted a shrine and told stories of Hindu Gods. The day ended with an assembly in which the children viewed costumes, had an opportunity to thank the visitors and were awarded certificates. The aim of the day was to get children and teachers to experience the aspects of different faiths and to enrich the children?s understanding of other people?s beliefs and religious practices, which everyone agreed was well and truly achieved.
