A PhD student studying carbon storage in Dartmoor's blanket peat will give the Dartmoor Society Research Lecture on Wednesday, November 17.
The lecture — 'The Sustainable Carbon management of British Blanket Peatlands: a Case Study on Dartmoor' — will be given by Lauren Perry.
Dr Tom Greeves, chairman of the Dartmoor Society, said: 'The Dartmoor Society has long argued for high quality debate and openness about research and management of the high moorland of Dartmoor.
'This lecture, by a leading researcher, is part of a programme of events organised by the Dartmoor Society to stimulate greater understanding between the scientific community, land managers and the general public about issues relating to the peat of Dartmoor. The lecture will appeal to all who want to know more about the amazing qualities of peat on Dartmoor, and how we might manage it in the future.'
Lauren's research is co-funded by the Duchy of Cornwall, Dartmoor National Park Authority, Natural England and the National Trust.
Dr Greeves said: 'This is "cutting edge" work of great importance for our understanding of the 12,000 hectares of Dartmoor's peat and how we might manage it in the future, and has significant implications for how we deal with future climate change.'
The lecture takes place in Room 128, School of Geography, Amory Building, Rennes Drive, University of Exeter at 7.30pm. All are welcome. To book a place — £3.50 to include a free glass of wine/soft drink, available from 6.30pm in the Senior Common Room, third floor, Amory Building, ring 01822 617004, or pay on the door.
