IT HAS been satisfying to watch solar panels being introduced into primary schools, but there are queries to be asked about Okehampton College using Ball Hill for wind turbines.
The land rental would go to a local charity and be used for the general good of the town; the actual land-line would be up to a mile long from hilltop to valley bottom. Would it be underground or overhead? There is also the cost of two turbines.
On the other hand there is within 100 yards of the school, a leat with water flowing quite fast and non-stop.
The Ockment Centre also has an adjacent leat which might be brought into use to generate electricity.
And when the Old Hill is eventually occupied again there is a quite powerful fall of water, which was, I gather, utilised in the old days.
Or is all this a mere pipe-dream?
