IT IS evident from the article in the Tavistock Times Gazette (March 7) that Tavistock College has expended a considerable amount of effort, time and money on the teaching of Japanese. But 'spin' and anecdotal evidence are no substitutes for facts in assessing the cost-effectiveness of the project.
May we be told the number of passes (Grade C and above) that have been obtained at O and A level examinations in the past ten years and how many Tavistock pupils have gone on to pursue a course in Japanese at university?
We could then judge whether or not the money could be better spent on other subjects.
