Devon League Tavistock v North Devon TAVISTOCK, still holding their 25 points lead at the top of division 1, entertained old rivals North Devon in what turned out to be one of the greatest games seen at the club, when 697 runs were scored. On a pitch described as a batting paradise and a bowlers? graveyard, North Devon made a fantastic start with Robert Gear and John Hayes putting on 136 for the first wicket. Gear went on to score 185 not out, a new Devon League record, beating Andy Pugh?s 183 . North Devon?s total also beat Exmouth?s record total of 340. Tavistock bowlers did not do themselves justice with two many short balls on a wicket that required contained bowling. During the tea interval run machine Searle said ?They scored them, why can?t we?? So along with Peter Jones they proceeded to put on 104 for the first wicket off 12 overs. Kevin Willcock joined Arnie Searle and they took the score to 186 when Searle was bowled for a superb 93. Willcock and David Manning then put on a tremendous stand of 117 before Manning was out, caught, Willcock went on to make 127 not out, leaving just 13 to win. Tavistock?s 349 is now the highest ever scored in the Devon League.
