LAURA Eastwood reached the final of the English Ladies? Open Intermediate Strokeplay Championship held from August 12 to 15 at Hollinwell Golf Club near Nottingham.
This competition is open to ladies aged 18 to 30 and with a handicap of 9 or less. Laura began with a round of 69 (SSS= 75) and was in tenth place with a total of 147 after the first two qualifying rounds. She then won five rounds of match play before losing to Nicky Timmins by 2 and 1 in the final.
Laura will be competing in the British Ladies? Open Strokeplay Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club from August 20 to 22. She has also recently been selected to play for England in the Italian Championship to be held next month.
On August 7 the ladies of Yelverton Golf Club played their monthly medal competition, combined with the silver salver competition, which is played over two days.
Maggie Flanagan won the silver division with a net 70; runner-up was Jean James with a net 72 and third was Laura Eastwood with a net 75. Lilias Strachan won the bronze division with a net 76; runner-up was Pat Chambers also with a net 76 and third was Ray Bovingdon with a net 81.
The second medal round for the silver salver was played on August 8. Laura Eastwood was first with a net 70; runner-up was Gilly Jarvis with a net 74 and third was Pat Chambers with a net 75. Overall, Laura Eastwood won the Silver Salver with a net 145 and runner-up was Pat Chambers with a net 151.
August 14 was the Ladies? Captain?s Day. Jean James organised a stableford competition with handicap allowance, and there was a ?flower theme? for the day.
The weather was perfect and the ladies, with many bedecked in flowery shirts and sun hats, played some superb golf. Pat Gove won the Captain?s Day bowl (which she donated last year!) with 42 points, Marie Watson, ladies? vice captain, was runner-up with 39 points and Angie Howard was third also with 39 points.
Every participant received a prize. The day ended with a delicious dinner in the clubhouse followed by an amusing auction, which raised almost £80 for the RNLI.
On August 4 a ladies? team played in a club event against a team of veterans and a team of juniors. One member of each team of 12 played together as a three-ball. The format was individual stableford with full handicap allowance.
The juniors were overall winners with a total of 417 points and the veterans were runners-up with 400 points. K Stokes won the best veteran?s prize with 40 points and J Friend was runner-up with 39 points.
Joan Voisin won the best lady?s prize with 35 points and runner up was Pat Gove with 34 points. O Amann won the best junior?s prize with 44 points, beating J Case, who was runner-up, on the back nine.
The winning 3-ball team of K Stokes, P Chambers and O Amman scored 117 points.
