A?BOOK based on regular diaries in the Guardian newspaper was launched at the Tamar Valley Centre on Friday.

The book, 'Silver River: An area of outstanding natural beauty' charts life in the Tamar Valley throughout the seasons.

Author Virginia Spiers, who contributes writings from the area to the Guardian's 'Country Diary' column, was brought up on a farm in St Dominic and her parents and grandparents were involved in farming and milling in the valley.

She said: 'I begin with spring when the amazing succession of narcissi, primroses, blossom, bluebells and ferns enhances the seclusion of sunken lanes and abandoned market gardens now reverted to woodland, so different from winter when derelict mine buildings and other ruins reappear among the leafless trees and stand out as stark reminders of the industrial past.'

The book is complemented by illustrations from artist Mary Martin. She studied art at the Royal Academy Schools and is renowned for her paintings depicting the valley's vibrant landscapes.

The book is published in association with the Tamar Valley AONB, and celebrates the 15-year anniversary of the valley being designated an area outstanding natural beauty.

The book costs £14.99 and will shortly by available from the Tamar Valley Centre and other local booksellers. For further information contact the Tamar Valley AONB: 01822 835030, [email protected]">[email protected]
