AN enthusiastic, though somewhat depleted Tavistock Swimming Club squad, took third place in the friendly gala against Bude, Devonport Royal and Launceston on Saturday at their home pool, Meadowlands. Launceston were the worthy winners with a runaway total of 204 points with Devonport Royal 147, Tavistock 139 and Bude 127. Tavistock?s vice-president Sue Dunstan attended and supplied welcome refreshments to the officials on a hot poolside. Felix Davies, Sam Campbell, Ross Williams, Michael Best, Tom Grennan-Cruise, Jake Broome and William Carter all achieved first places for Tavistock. There were some close finishes in the relay events but Tavistock could only manage one first place, a convincing win by the 11/under 4x50m medley relay team of Tom Grennan-Cruise, Sam Campbell, Felix Davies and Kameron Brimble. The 13/under team of Tom Waddington, Chris Mills, Tom Crocker and Joshua Stephens came close to winning 4x50m medley events but were just beaten on the touch. With Amy Warnett the only swimmer in the girls? open category, Laura Radgick, Kirsty Best, Catriona Smith and Laura Aspen all swam up age groups, with Kirsty taking a second place in the open 50m breaststroke. Coach Wendy Stephens nominated Laura Aspen as Swimmer of the Gala. Representing Tavistock for the first time were Sally Carter, Lily Edwards, Kieron Rookes, Hannah Robson, Sam O?Boyle and Peter Jarman. In the Development Galas held at Tiverton recently there were some excellent swims and personal best times recorded by Tavistock swimmers. Sam Campbell took gold in the 200m breaststroke in the 10 years category and the silver in the 100m IM and the 200m IM. The butterfly events was successful for Tavistock with Ross taking gold in the 14 years 100m butterfly and silver in the 200m butterfly and Rebecca Windemer silver in the 12 years 200m butterfly. Joshua Stephens won bronze in the 12 years 200m butterfly.
