A VICTORIAN bandstand in the Meadows in Tavistock may be replaced with something more 21st Century, town councillors said this week.
Despite its sentimental value, the bandstand is virtually redundant because it is not large enough for modern day brass bands.
Tavistock bandmaster Peter Jones said all the structure was doing at the moment was to give youngsters somewhere out of the way to have a drink.
?It is too small for most bands and we tend to play in Bedford Square because that is where we would attract the largest crowds.?
Mayor Norma Woodcock said if the bandstand was to go the money saved could be used to provide an appropriate shelter for the youngsters of the town ? up to 300 gathered in the park on a Friday night.
Cllr Ted Sherrell said: ?This will become an eyesore over a period of time and it may be better to find something that is useful to the present day.?
