Yelverton Second XI v Whitchurch YELVERTON Seconds completed their 2007 Devon League campaign in successful fashion with an eight wicket victory over Whitchurch. Whitchurch won the toss and elected to bat first and openers Smith (24) and Meadows (30) went off at a canter with an opening partnership of 44 off the first seven overs. The scoring rate slowed when Joel Avery bowled Smith for 24. Soon after, skipper Chris Pearson introduced himself into the attack and took the wicket of A Pedrick for a duck. The introduction of slow bowlers Mike Chetwynd and Jerry Warland further tightened the screw as the Whitchurch batsmen found runs hard to come by. Only Dean Elliott with 16 and skipper Steve Hodge with 15 made much headway. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals with Chetwynd ending up with the fine figures of 6 - 37 off 12.3 miserly overs and Warland similarly frugal with 2-19 off 11. The last Whitchurch wicket fell with the score on 142 in the 45th over. In reply, the Yelverton openers set off in hot pursuit with Kevin Beare and Lee Johns both hitting a number of early boundaries. Despite the loss of Beare with the score on 28 and Johns on 31, an unbeaten 3rd wicket partnership of 112 between 17 year old Paul James with a 10 boundary unbeaten knock of 55 and veteran Gerry Keen, who also hit 10 boundaries in his unbeaten 50, took Yelverton to victory by eight wickets in the 24th over. Yelverton Third XI v Delabole YELVERTON third?s season ended on a disappointing note as they lost their final league game of the season to league winners Delabole. Richard Garland scored a fine 50 and veteran bowler Terry Roe took five wickets for Yelverton. Annual President?s Match THIS season´s Annual Presidents Match held at Yelverton´s Langton Park ground proved to be a thriller as the scores were tied at 183 at the end of the allotted overs. The assembly of past players and guests were treated to an entertaining and enthralling game played in a good spirit. The President?s XI captained by President Brian Chetwynd´s son Mike batted first and lost Dave Watson (5) early on to the bowling of Tony Carter. After the loss of Phil Marchant for 6 lbw to Carter a good partnership between Jake Luffman (32) and Julian Brailey (13) took the score to 89 before Brailey fell to a smart slip catch by Rutherford off the bowling of Dan Vince. Luffman soon followed, also caught at slip off the bowling of Chris Pearson, the catcher this time was Sanjiv Shrivastav. Chris Cottrell and Dominic Ellis put on 63 runs for the fifth wicket before Cottrell (23) was unluckily run out. Ellis continued on his merry way scoring a fine 39 at a run a ball before Pearson bowled him off an inside edge. Some late order hitting from Willcocks, Chetwynd and Butson took the score up to a respectable 183-8. In reply, the Yelverton openers Tim Rutherford and Dan Vince took the score along to 24 before Rutherford (14) was caught at slip by Chris Cottrell to become the first of Butson´s victims. Bennett (3) was also bowled by Butson to leaves the core on 28-2. Paul James (13) and Dan Vince (29) went about re-building the innings with a stand of 36 for the 3rd wicket before Butson removed Vince. Impetus to the innings was provided by the arrival of Sanjiv Shrivastav at the crease as he bludgeoned a quickfire 63 at a run a ball to put the Club XI back on course. His dismissal with the score on 135 caught by Willcocks at cover off the bowling of the returning Butson left the Club XI with a mountain to climb. Skipper Rob Guy (32) put bat to ball and was well supported by Rory Avery and Chris Pearson before the later was run out with the score on 175 - 7. Ben Vince was run out with the score on 182 and Guy was brilliantly caught by Cottrell off the bowling of Butson (5-42) with the score still on 182. Off the penultimate delivery, last pair Tony Carter and Paul O?Hanlon scampered a run to tie the scores and it was left to Carter to score the winning run off the last delivery of the game bowled by Butson. Carter swung and missed and the game was over with honours even. Man of match for the President?s XI was Butson for his fine bowling spell of 5-42. Club President Brian Chetwynd presented the President?s Shield to both captains as it will be shared until next season.
