A SUBSTANTIAL quantity of large print books are now available for sale at Tavistock's Oxfam Bookshop. Many donations have been received recently to build up the stock, which is now more than 100. Shop manager Val Sharpe said: 'A huge thank you to all the donors that have brought these books in. They are relatively difficult to come by and often have to be "printed on demand" which makes them expensive as new books. The donations we have are therefore valuable to those with impaired vision and also valuable to Oxfam. 'We have a selection of our books in the shop and a larger supply in the back room so just come in and ask and a volunteer can show customers the full range.' The Oxfam Bookshop plans to maintain this section within the shop, so if anybody can donate any more to Oxfam, it would be appreciated. Already some customers who know the books are there have bought the large print books and then brought them back when they came in for more, enabling the shop to re-sell them. Volunteer Fiona Lamb has approached the opticians in town and Alistair Kinsey and provided information and notices to inform their customers and staff of the books. She will be looking to maintain the books over the coming months for customers to benefit from them. In addition to large print books, donations of all books, CDs and DVDs are welcome. The shop has a back door in North Street which makes the delivery of donations easier — just ring the door bell. Donations can also be collected, just phone the shop on 01822 613901. Both Oxfam shops in the town have been backing the Disasters Emergency Committee crisis appeal for people in Gaza. The DEC is made up of all major UK aid agencies, including Oxfam, Save the Children and the British Red Cross. These agencies are rapidly increasing the level of assistance they are providing despite the dangers involved. Oxfam is delivering safe water to up to 175,000 people every day. Just £10 can feed a family for at least a day and £25 can buy 150 bandages. You can also donate £5 by texting the word GAZA to 70066. Val said: 'We are urging people to be as generous as they can and help us raise funds to help the people of Gaza. The population has a huge number of children and for many of these this will be the third war they have seen in recent years, with all the associated hardship and fear. 'We are calling for money donations as this is the best way to help. We have seen on our televisions the scenes of destruction and heart breaking stories of loss. Many are in desperate need of a roof over their heads, clean water, food and medical help.'
