Devon Senior cup area final —South Lamerton 2 Bere Alston 1 THIS exciting local derby between two in-form Duchy Premier teams produced a real spectacle for the large number of onlookers at Tavistock's Langsford Park. The game set off at a fast pace with Bere looking to dictate. Lamerton created many of the best chances and within the first five minutes they could have had a penalty when striker Zac Beesley was brought down in the box. Moments later Beesley fed Rich Searle down the left who brought a fine save from Craig Howells. Lamerton's formation thwarted Bere Alston's game with James Healy and Steve Gibbings pressing the talented Dave Hallet and Lee Blatchford in midfield. The breakthrough came halfway through the first half. Lamerton were awarded a free kick a long way out. Kev Swift shot and with the Bere wall using their arms to protect; handball was awarded, giving Swift another chance ten yards further forward. This time he struck the perfect free kick around the wall and into the corner past Howells's despairing dive. The game could have been level before half-time when Lee Blatchford hit a post with a header and Chris Truscott having a goal ruled out when the ball had crossed the by-line. Lamerton looked favourites for the second half. Simon and Paul Breyley were exceptional at the back giving Bere's lone striker Truscott nothing to work with. Bere captain Will Westlake also struggled to produce anything on the left, with Ben Rushall outstanding for Lamerton. Lamerton went two ahead on the hour when full back Tony Jones caught Bere winger Kevin Blatchford dwelling on the ball in a dangerous area. Jones slid in with great determination to win the ball and whip in a perfect cross with his left foot, which was beautifully glanced into the far corner by Beesley's head. Bere got a lifeline ten minutes from time — the referee, who had an excellent game, had already correctly turned down two Bere attempts for a penalty, but when Simon Breyley put his arm on Truscott in the area, he blew his whistle. Kevin Blatchford fired down the middle for 2-1 and some hope. But Lamerton's defence stood strong and it was all but left to a Hallett free kick in the dying seconds to save the day - his effort from the edge of the box hit the wall and Lamerton were able to celebrate a well-deserved victory. They now move into the semi-final to play Moretonhampstead.
