Duchy Division 1 Altarnun 2 Lamerton 5 LOSING this game would have seen Lamerton relinquish top of the league to their opponents. That fact seemed to motivate the away team more; for it was Lamerton who took the game by the scruff of the neck early on. Will Cann, who is likely to be out for the rest of the season with a depressed fracture of the skull, was replaced by Graham Cole at full back, and he did a valuable job on Altarnun?s best player: Lee Phillips, who was a constant threat. Lamerton got going straight away. Kev Swift provided the lead when his shot from distance deflected past a wrong footed Altarnun keeper. It was 3-0 soon after with goals from corner kicks: Panda Williams with the deliveries and Paul Breyley plus Pete Broomfield with the foot/head. Lamerton made it 4-0 just after the break when Dan Healy?s shot was parried to the onrushing Broomfield, who tapped in. The game then changed, under the influence of ex-Lamerton Jimmy Cole. He rallied the troops with a goal: Simon Breyley?s headed clearance was hooked back goalwards toward the top corner and Pete Daniels? reaction save unluckily came back off a post, straight to Jimmer Cole, who scored from two yards. Altarnun stepped up and attacked Lamerton in a way they should have done earlier. They got another goal back from a corner to shake things up for the mid part of the second half, but Lamerton?s defence stood firm, and Pete Daniel held on to everything in goal. Steve Wickett made the game safe when he rounded the keeper after Swift?s through ball and scooped home. It was a good performance by all in a testing encounter.
