Bodmin Trophies
Duchy division 3
Lanivet 1
Lamerton 10
ON a gloriously sunny afternoon in Bodmin, Lamerton concluded their season with an unexpectedly easy victory against a team who had run them close a few weeks earlier.
Lanivet began the brighter and had an early goal disallowed for handball before Lamerton took the lead. Good work by Kev Swift and Dan Healy set up top scorer Paul Cowling to fire in a crisp left foot shot.
Shortly afterwards Simon Breyley headed in a Tony Jones corner and from then on it was all one-way. Healy scored the third and Swift was put through to score a good fourth goal. A Swift free kick then found its way into the net to make the score 5-0 at the break.
In the second half Steve Gibbings scored a couple, one set up by Zak Beesley back after an injury lay-off, Paul Breyley kept up his scoring run and Swift took his tally to four, overtaking Healy in the overall scoring stakes.
Lanivet battled gamely and pulled a goal back but were in general pleased to get their season over.
Lamerton ended the season in third place, and out of the automatic promotion places, with 55 points from 26 games, scoring 91 goals and conceding 30 in the process. Whether more than two teams go up will not be known until the Duchy League annual meeting on June 22.
Whilst the season may have been somewhat disappointing in terms of winning things the football played has at times been exceptional and bodes well for the future.
The committee thanks all the players and spectators for their efforts and support over the year - with a special thanks to Bridget at the Chichester Arms ? and looks forward to seeing them all next season.
