Tavistock 5

St Austell 1

THE Lambs bounced back from the previous defeat at Torpoint with this convincing win to keep them on course for second spot.

They almost stole a first-minute lead as Wayne Crow?s shot took a deflection off Paul Smith to go just wide of the post Crow then took a hefty challenge and had to be replaced by Mark Wall on 20 minutes before the Lambs opened the scoring five minutes later. An assistant referee?s flag across his chest indicated a penalty after Lee Doncaster had been pushed in the area and up stepped Smith to put the Lambs one up.

Eight minutes later the Lillywhites found themselves down to ten men when local lad Rob Maloney spoiled his return by hotly disputing a decision with the same official and received a red card.

The Lambs took full advantage of the extra man with Wall winning a strong midfield ball to send Doncaster away to get to the ball before the keeper, beat him and walk it home.

The Lambs poured forward from the start of the second half. A double substitution on 67 minutes with James Cole and Will Westlake being replaced by Simon Parnell and Steve Daymond helped to bring further goals.

Eight minutes later Parnell headed home powerfully at close range from a Smith corner and John Gosling rounded off a great move involving Daymond, Doncaster and Paul Adcock to bend the ball past the keeper.

The visitors managed to get a goal back with six minutes remaining when Lee Beer was fouled in the area for Ryan Williams to score from the spot. But within a minute the Lambs replied after a great run by Daymond from deep inside his own half sent in a shot that Doncaster put the finishing touch on to complete a fine team performance.

THE Lambs were missing the services of captain Nathan Blamey, Paul Adcock, John Gosling and the injured Wayne Crow from the St Austell game but in came Graeme Kirkup, Mark Wall, Steve Brownlow and Steve Daymond to the starting line up.

It took until the 25th minute before the Lambs opened the scoring when from a corner Darren Babb dived in where the boots were flying to see his header blocked on the line. But his fellow central defender was on hand to slam home the rebound from eight yards.

They could have increased their lead five minutes into the second half when the Magpies conceded a penalty but Paul Smith?s spot kick was saved by Dennis Annear.

The game really livened up in the last 20 minutes when the visitors unexpectedly levelled as the Lambs were caught on the break for Dave Burt to go down the wing. Despite Andy Meeds getting hands to his cross he could not prevent the unmarked Steve Hancock slotting home.

But the Lambs were not going to be denied. Roared on by a fair sized crowd swelled by the Tavistock Jets, Thistles and Girls invited for the Fun Day, they went all out for the winner in the closing stages and got the breakthrough with ten minutes remaining.

Daymond?s low drive was partially saved by Annear as the ball slipped from his grasp at the foot of the post and there was Smith to make amends from his spot kick to steer the ball home from an acute angle.

The Lambs sealed a great victory a minute from time when Smith?s corner kick was stroked home at the second attempt by Darren Babb.

The Lambs now need four points from their remaining two games to secure second spot in the league. Porthleven are the only team that can catch them, providing they win all their remaining games. The Lambs will have played St Blazey last night (Wednesday) and their final game is at Saltash this Saturday with a 3pm kick-off.

Callington Town 2

Millbrook 1

TEENAGE striker Mike Ruark scored a second half brace to turn this game on its head and give Callington all three points at Ginsters Marshfield Parc on April 30.

After a goal-less and un-eventful first half, the game sprang to life eight minutes after the break when Steve Murphy gave Millbrook the lead with a powerful drive from the edge of the box that beat Andy Brenton in the Town goal.

The strike seemed to awaken Callington and within a minute they were level. Tom Barwell?s free kick found Ruark and the tall front man turned it past Dave Rice.

With 20 minutes to go, another good piece of work saw the ball drop to Ruark 15 yards out and he fired the ball into the net to grab all three points which may well have finally secured the fight to avoid relegation.
