THERE was a minute's silence before the game in honour of the late Sir Stanley Matthews.

With no first team game, managers Chris Abbott and Craig Smith brought in Craig Hodge, Darren Halfyard and Peter Tiffney and the added luxury of a deputy keeper with Andy Meeds on the bench.

The Lambs started well with Tiffney going close in the second minute. The visitors had their first effort on goal after 15 minutes when Stevens saw his shot tipped over the bar by Pat Gibson. Tiffney was again on target when he tried to curl a shot over the keeper, who did well to tip the ball over the bar.

Plymstock took the lead on the half-hour when Rhodes ghosted in behind a static defence at the far post to head in from close range past a helpless Gibson.

The home side had the perfect start to the second half with Steve Bray, Richard Cameron and Peter Gibson combining for the latter to send in a cross that Tiffney did well to control and turn back into goal under the keeper.

The celebrations of drawing level soon disappeared as within five minutes the visitors regained the lead.

Tiffney appeared to be fouled as he was put through, but with everyone appealing to the referee play continued and the ball was put through for Andy Bacon to curl around Gibson from 30 yards.

It was not going to be the Lambs' day as first Pete Gibson had a header cleared away on the hour and from a free kick right on time Rob Hawkins' shot was cleared off the line. The Lambs never really got going and Plymstock deserved the victory.
