LAST week two of Okehampton Golf Club Ladies played the Finals of the Devon County Veterans Knockout Fourball Better Ball Competition. Marcia Jones and Mo Huggins played Staddon Heights at Thurlestone, giving 11 & 8 shots meant they had to really be on form. But Mo and Marcia were up to the challenge and won the match 5-4 a truly excellent result. The Ladies Bronze section continue their success, on Monday, September 4 they played Honiton in the Quarter Finals of the Sheelah Creasy County Competition. It was a busy day with eight teams trying to reach the finals day. Okehampton played extremely well and Kath Mansell, Chris Stevens, Pat Kirby the first three out won, but Honiton pulled back with Doris Jewell and Gladys Thatcher losing their matches. This meant Okehampton needed one more to win but both the Captain and Vice Captain, Maureen Howe and Eileen Piper, won so it was a 5-2 win for Okehampton. This means that on September 22 they are off to Bigbury Golf Club for the Finals Day. On Wednesday the ladies played for the LGU Pin a Qualifying medal. The winner of the Pin was Chris Turner with a truly wonderful round of net 62, this means her handicap comes down from 31 to 27, very well played Chris. Second bronze was Chris Stevens net 72, third Maureen Howe net 76. The Silver Division was won by Dawn Phillott net 68 so now playing off an 8 hcp! Second Marcia Holwill net 69 and third Lyn Hazelton net 70. On Saturday the men of the club played the Cheltenham & Gloucester Scratch and Handicap Cups. Winning the Scratch Cup with an excellent gross 70 net 65 was Lee Carey, second Pete Murphy gross 77 net 67(back 9) and third Adam Cook gross 77 net 67. Division 2 was won by Nick Godfrey gross 80 net 63, second Sean Lewis gross 85 net 66 and third gross 81 net 67 was Ted Boswell. Division 3 saw Rich Camies gross 86 net 59 winning the Handicap Cup, second Steve Gregory gross 86 net 62 and third Russell Dibble gross 86 net 64.
