THERE were no planned senior matches in the league for Tavistock Tennis Club last week, but two re-arranged ladies? matches were played.
With the juniors it was unfortunate that one of the two planned matches had to be postponed as it was not possible to field a full team.
Results ? Seniors: Ladies? A team lost 4-5 away against Plymstock A in a match which hinged on a tie break and could have gone the other way. Tric Locker/Tori Cunningham v their 1st pair; 3-6, 6-7: v 2nd pair; 6-3, 6-4. Sue Parsons/Melody Mason v their 1st pair; 2-6, 1-6: v 2nd pair; 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
C team drew 4-4 at home against Devonshire C. Sue Whitman/Anne Bruce v their 1st pair; 7-6, 6-1: v 2nd pair; 6-4, 6-3. Gaynor Pollard/Barbara Watson v their 1st pair; 5-7, 0-6: v 2nd pair; 2-6, 3-6.
Juniors: Second team lost 38-45 in a close match which hinged on a 5-7 set where at one stage Tavistock were in the lead. Peter Bloomfield v their 1st player; 6-3, 6-3. Peter/Jamie Osborne v their 2nd pair; 2-6, 3-6. Stephen Richardson v their 2nd player; 7-6, 6-3. Stephen/Jamie v their 2nd pair; 3-6, 5-7. Russell Rice, a stalwart of the juniors for many years, has received an award for consistent performance through the league competition to date.
? The finals of the tennis section out of nine sports of the Devon Youth Games were held at Exmouth on Saturday with ten local authority teams participating. Tavistock area juniors Rhys Dunford, Aidan Mason, Charlie Bury, Chanell Belcher, Deborah Allan and Charlotte Richard played for Team West Devon in the Green Ball group of the preliminary rounds where they came up against some tough opposition. Although losing all their matches, albeit one very close at 13-14 by Rhys in the singles, they came fourth out of five teams on points overall.
Friendly matches: In the annual triangular mini tournament at the club, Tavistock, Yelverton and North Wyke, Tavistock won with 41 points, Yelverton 35 and North Wyke 31 in a good evening?s tennis with some close sets.
All pairs played the other pairs in each club for two sets over four rounds, the result based on games. Babette and John Jackson were outstanding winning all sets and a feature of this tournament was that each pair won at least one set. Other Tavistock players: Josie Gerhold/John Burgess.
In a match with Launceston at home, it was unfortunate that after the first round of mixed doubles with the club leading 4-0 and ahead in the next, the match had to be abandoned due to rain. Team: Jane Colegate/Tim Wallis and Pat Warne/Matt Salisbury.
