Tavistock Ladies 1st XI 5 Teignmouth 4 TAVISTOCK hockey players were battling for the ball in this Plate Competition match but the quick passing skills from the opposition allowed them to score an early goal. Goalkeeper Zoe Viggers then made some crucial saves resulting in the defensive play of Babs Horton and Emma White moving the ball up the pitch. Sarah Barratt had a good game in midfield and switched the ball from Laura Armstrong and Fiona Dunn. Dunn played the whole of the first half as a midfielder and moved the ball easily past the opposition. With Jo Gaspar and Robynne Honey making their normal partnership play the ball was quickly driven into the ?D? resulting in numerous attacking short corners for Tavistock. Unfortunately the ball was deflected out despite the first shot from Laura Stapleton and Gaspar being solid strikes. Teignmouth broke through into the defensive area and scored their second goal. Tavistock were playing some good hockey and this then started to reap dividends for the team. Towards the latter part of the first half, the forwards really put the defence under pressure and Judy Miller and Honey were chasing down every ball. The ball was hit into the ?D? by Stapleton and Armstrong took it past numerous defenders to bring the score to 2-1 at half-time. Tavistock were a different team in the second half and definitely had a greater percentage of the attacking play but the ball could not find the back of the goal. Teignmouth still kept possession and it was up to Dunn to run back over half the length of the pitch to prevent the player from entering the ?D?. Teignmouth would have scored earlier if it was not for the strong keeping of Viggers. However, they did see a small gap from a short corner and took the game to 3-1. Tavistock then took the game to the opposition and Gaspar hammered a brilliant shot past the keeper. From this point on and for the remaining 25minutes, Tavistock were heavy on the attack and the defence of Tavistock were not troubled at all. After numerous short corners being awarded to the opposition which they could not capitalise on, Tavistock had a free hit with only 90 seconds left. Horton hit a strong ball out to Honey who drove it up the pitch and crossed it to Armstrong who scored the equalising goal. As this was a plate match, this score resulted in Penalty Flicks being taken. Tavistock managed to score two goals from their flicks, Miller and Barratt but the opposition could only get one goal past the superb Viggers. Viggers saved 4 shots on goal with the greatest of ease and pulled Tavistock through to win 5-4 and through to the next round. This week Tavistock are at home at Bickleigh Barracks with a 12.30pm start against Bodmin. Tavistock: Zoe Viggers, Fiona Dunn (captain), Babs Horton, Lisa Butler, Laura Stapleton, Emma White, Sarah Barratt, Laura Armstrong, Judy Miller, Jo Gaspar, Robynne Honey.
