OVERALL results were mixed for Tavistock Tennis Club in the league last week but there were two good wins for the ladies and a good one for the juniors.

With the exception of one junior match conceded by the opposition and unfortunate in the interests of the game, all planned matches were completed.

Results for week 8 - Men's A team lost 4-6 away against Mannamead A in a match that was closer than the score depicts. Simon Thomas and Bernard Mowle v their 1st pair; 3-6, 6-4, 2-6: v 2nd pair; 6-3, 6-2. Ray Hinton and Duncan Law v their 1st pair; 2-6, 2-6: v 2nd pair; 6-4, 3-6, 2-6.

B-team lost 3-6 away against Whiteford Rd. John Stephens and Owen Locker v their 1st pair; 3-6, 1-6: v 2nd pair; 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. Phil Harbottle and Chris Poole v their 1st pair; 2-6, 0-6: v 2nd pair; 4-6, 6-1, 0-6.

C team lost 4-6 away against St. Budeaux C in a match which hinged on one crucial tie breaker. John Jackson and David Martin v their 1st pair; 6-3, 6-7, 6-4: v 2nd pair; 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Mike Jefferies and Steve Fletcher v their 1st pair; 1-6, 3-6: v 2nd pair; 1-6, 4-6.

D team lost 0-8 at home against Liskeard who fielded a very strong team. David Isaac and Nick Simpson v their 1st pair; 0-6, 2-6: v 2nd pair; 0-6, 1-6. Will Sparks and Josh Sutton v their pair; 2-6, 2-6: v 2nd pair; 2-6, 1-6.

Ladies A team won 7-2 at home against Ivybridge C. Di Kersey and Annie Jefferies v their 1st pair; 7-5, 6-2: v 2nd pair; 6-1, 7-5. Penny Deakin and Tric Locker v their 1st pair; 7-6, 4-6, 4-6: v 2nd pair; 6-0, 6-1.

B team drew 4-4 at home against Ivybridge D. Sue Parsons and Tric Mowle v their 1st pair; 7-5, 6-4: v 2nd pair; 3-6, 2-6. Olga Rogers and Jane Colegate v their 1st pair; 4-6, 1-6: v 2nd pair; 6-3, 6-4.

C team won 7-2 at home against Russell Ave B who could only field one pair. Barbara Watson and Annie Bruce v their 1st pair; 6-2, 6-1: v 2nd pair; [6-0, 6-0]. Sara Whyman and Claudine Sparks 6-3, with second and third sets conceded by Tavistock due to an unfortunate injury to Claudine in the second set: v 2nd pair [6-0, 6-0].

Juniors A team match conceded by Saltash who were unable to raise a team.

B team won 6-2 away to St Budeaux. James Martin v their 1st player; 2-6, 2-6. Sara Whyman and Will Sparks v their 1st pair; 6-2, 6-1.Sara v their 2nd player; 6-1, 6-1. James and Will v their 2nd pair; 6-4, 6-4.

D team lost 1-8 away against Whiteford Rd who are presently top of the 3rd Divn. Ashley Rice v their 1st player; 5-7, 6-7. Anna Maunder and Daniel Clark v their 1st pair; 2-6, 3-6. Anna v their 2nd player; 1-6, 2-6. Ashley and Daniel v their 2nd pair; 6-4, 2-6, 2-6.

The early rounds of the club annual tournaments are now well under way where there have been some hard fought matches but no shocks to date. Finals day is planned for Saturday July 20.
