Knockout Cup second round

Torpoint 1

Lamerton 4

Lamerton met Torpoint for the second time in two weeks and as usual it was a close affair.

Played on a remarkably good pitch the first half saw few clear cut chances with defences being on top. Both sides managed to hit the crossbar, the visitors from a Graham Cole free kick.

The deadlock was broken after half an hour when another Cole free kick was neatly hooked past the home keeper by Paul Cowling.

The second half saw Lamerton playing with the slope and they doubled their lead when Zak Beesley sent a header into the corner of the net from another Cole pass.

Cowling made it three when he beat both defender and keeper to a Beesley through ball and ran the ball into the empty net.

Torpoint kept pushing forward, but good defending by Tim Lyle and Simon Breyley at the heart of the Lamerton defence kept them at bay. With regulars missing it was encouraging that the midfield of Steve Gibbings, Dan Healy, Will Cann and Dan O'Hare more than held their own against a strong Torpoint.

The home side pulled a goal back in the last five minutes when Neil Williams beat Pete Daniel fron close range.

Lamerton will play first division Lanreath in the next round.

This Saturday sees Lamerton at home to St Stephens Borough in the league, kick-off 2.30pm.
