A SPREYTON girl has snapped her way to the Victoria and Albert Museum after winning a prize in a national photographic competition. Kirsty Hawkins achieved the winning entry in the ?Success? category of the Snap! competition, organised by Mencap, the UK?s leading charity for children and adults with a learning disability. Kirsty?s photograph (right) was selected from more than 850 entries and will be going on display at the V&A Museum from June 18 until August 1. Kirsty will be attending a special prizewinners? ceremony at the museum on June 22 where she will receive her prize from Mencap president Lord Rix. June 20 to 26 is Learning Disability Week and the prizewinning ceremony is a key event of the week which focuses on ?Opening up New Worlds of Opportunity?. Kirsty, who has a learning disability, attends the Leaze day centre in Okehampton where she particularly enjoys creative projects. Her support worker Vicky Hooper took the photograph of Kirsty using a public telephone and the photograph impressed the judges because it gives an idea of the achievements of people with a learning disability which so many of us take for granted. Kirsty said: ?This photo shows me talking on the phone. Up until a few weeks ago I couldn?t use the telephone because I didn?t know how. ?I really want to become more independent and learning to use the phone is really important to me because it gives me confidence and I like saying hello to people. ?I have started to learn how to use a public telephone box which helps me with my money skills too. I feel excited and proud that I have learnt how to use the telephone.? The display features more than 30 of the best photographs and stories by and about people with a learning disability chosen by a panel of judges, including press photographer Eamonn McCabe and portrait and fashion photographer John Swannell. Kirsty?s photograph will also appear in Understanding Us: Volume 2, a book of the winners of 2004 and 2005 which is available from the V&A bookshop or [email protected]">[email protected] priced at £19.95.
