AS a relative newcomer to this beautiful corner of the world I am sure I'm not alone in being shocked at the terrible standard of driving on local roads. Very often this is by holidaymakers unused to driving country roads.
I understand that almost two-thirds of deaths are now on rural roads, while cycling on them is three times more dangerous than in urban areas. These are not figures we can afford, as a community, to ignore.
The Government is currently asking for people's opinions on how it can make our roads the safest in the world. If you are also concerned at how inappropriately speeding traffic risks our children's safety you can make your voice heard.
It couldnt be easier. Visit the Campaign to Protect Rural England's website as they have a draft letter you can amend to suit your viewpoint. Their website is http://www.cpre.org.uk">www.cpre.org.uk
Please write — we all complain the Government never listens to us country people so let's not waste the chance when they actually are for a change.
