THE photograph you published of Kelly College (Those Were The Days, Times, July 1) was taken rather earlier than indicated.

The main building in the photograph is without the east wing (which balances the west wing) which was added in 1900.

In December 1897, on the death of Mrs Kelly, widow of the founder, a sum of £22,000 in which she had a life interest reverted to the college, which enabled the main building to be completed, formal opening coming on March 31, 1900, performed by the Rev Maitland Kelly.

The cricket pavilion, also shown in the photograph, was built in 1895, the cost of this (and the swimming pool and gymnasium) being met by a loan from the Headmaster, the Rev William Hermann David, who subsequently gave a considerable amount of the money to the school - present school headmasters take note!

The photograph therefore dates from between 1895 and 1900, the absence of any signs of building work suggesting earlier rather than later.

I hope this may be of some interest.
