Devon & Exeter Intermediate 1
South Zeal Utd 3
Motel Rangers 1
ZEAL won against Motel the previous Saturday with goals from Brimacombe and Harley Cann securing a hard earned 2-1 victory away from home. Zeals defence held out well in the second half and Adam Cann made some great saves to help secure the three points.
The home fixture was never going to be easy and with Reg Wonnacott missing from the defence Zeal had to make several changes to the side that won the previous week.
Although securing a good victory the match was marred by a terrible injury to Adam Cann — after 15 minutes the Zeal keeper suffered a double fracture to his right leg when falling awkwardly after claiming a cross played into the penalty area.
Everyone connected with Zeal wishes Adam a swift and complete recovery and looks forward to seeing him back in action next season.
Cleave Collins took over in goal and the match continued with the Zeal defence trying to cope with the enforced changes and withstanding a lot of pressure from the Motel forwards.
However, Zeal settled with their new formation and went ahead after 30 minutes when Shaun Hiscock broke down the left and hit an unstoppable shot from 30 yards.
Zeal were playing well and it was no surprise when they went further ahead after great play between White and Smith put Brimacombe clear on goal — the Zeal striker made no mistake to increase his impressive tally for the season.
With the score at 2-0 Zeal were in command but the Motel forwards were always a threat and reduced the arrears after 10 minutes of the restart.
A diagonal ball found one of their strikers free just outside the penalty area. Collins came to narrow the angle but a great shot left him stranded. It seemed Motel were poised to get back in the game but Zeal's defence, with Wooldridge,Sanderson and Jones playing well were in no mood to relinquish their lead.
Motel came under severe pressure from the Zeal attack and after a great move between Bellairs and Cann down the right Smith restored Zeal's two-goal advantage with a net buster from 15 yards.
