TAW Vale Judo Club sent four of its junior members — Jack Clutterbuck, Adrian and Richard Plumpton and Lawrence Waldron — to the Devon County Judo Championships held at Exmouth Sports Centre.
For Jack and Lawrence it was their first competition outside the club, but this did not seem to deter them.
Lawrence was drawn in the largest category of the day, the junior boys under 30 kilos. He gave an excellent account, making his way through the group to fight for the bronze medal position, which he only lost after an excellent display of attacking judo which gave him fifth place.
Jack was in the next weight category up, under 34 kilos, where despite his lack of competitive experience he won the bronze medal.
Meanwhile Adrian and Richard were in the upper age group, the senior boys. Here, Richard was at a weight disadvantage, as his under 34 kilo weight was not available and he was fighting in the next weight group up, the under 38 kilos. In a close fought group he took the bronze medal.
Adrian, competing at under 60 kilos, celebrated his new green belt with an excellent performance to take the silver medal.
As a result of their performances Adrian and Richard have been selected by Devon County to go forward to the Western Area selection trials for a place in their respective categories in the British Judo Association Junior National Championship.
