A NEW centre for young people in Princetown took a major step forward this week when contracts were signed to start work to renovate the village's former cricket pavilion. The £120,000 youth centre will include a small hall, computer room, music room, office, kitchen and toilets and will be available for local teenagers to use and enjoy. With the assistance of Chris Gregory, deputy steward for The Duchy of Cornwall, the High Moorland Community Action will have a 21-year lease on the building. Geri Laithwaite, of High Moorland Community Action, joined representatives from Dartmoor Forest Parish Council, the Duchy of Cornwall, the contractors and youngsters from Princetown Youth Club to mark the occasion and witness the signing. Ward Williams Associates, who are quantity surveyors in Tavistock, and BJ Construction signed the agreement to undertake the renovation. The work is due to be completed by the end of June. The project has been financed by £42,000 from the Devon Youth Service, £28,000 from the Safer Devon Partnership, £12,000 from Devon County Council, £20,000 from West Devon Borough Council, £5,000 from the Dartmoor National Park Authority, £5,250 from the Community Safety Partnership, £3,000 from the Camelot Foundation, £10,000 from the Duchy of Cornwall towards a new roof, £100 from the parish council, and the re-settlement unit at Dartmoor Prison will also be participating in the project. Paul Dobbie, an area youth worker for Devon Youth Service, told the Times: 'This will provide a place for the young people in the village to have a warm, safe space they can call their own.' Jade Marchant, 16, and from Princetown, added: 'It means such a lot to have some place to go during the week. I'm looking forward to the computer room and the kitchen, where we will have cooking classes. It's going to be great.'
