A £10,000 PROJECT to install new manholes in the foul and surface water system in Tavistock is due to start next month.

South West Water is preparing to the carry out the work at the junction of West Street and North Street, which will mean the area being closed to traffic for two weeks.

Stephen Swain, spokesman for the company, said South West Water 'regrets' the fact that newly laid block paving will have to come up to enable the work to take place.

'The need for the sewer work has only become apparent since the completion of the highway improvement,' he said.

'The paving will be reinstated to its original condition immediately after completion of the manholes.'

Mr Swain said the additional manholes in Tavistock's sewer system were required to improve access for maintenance, which would be a long-term benefit to people and properties in the town centre.

North Street will be closed to traffic once the work begins on October 15 and local diversions will be put in place. Access for pedestrians and delivery vehicles will be maintained.

Mr Swain said the work, which will take two weeks to complete, had been planned for October 15 so that it would not disrupt Goose Fair, on October 10.
